Bhubaneswar: Tobacco consumption has a devastating effect on the human body, which ruins the entire life even before death. Experts always warn of the ill-effect of tobacco chewing and smoking. On the world No Tobacco Day, doctors appealed to the youth mass to stay away from the deadly habits.

The world is observing the No Tobacco Day with this year’s theme “Protecting children from tobacco industry interference.” It aims to protect future generations and ensure a constant decrease in tobacco consumption.

This year theme aims to safeguard the young generation from the manipulative tactics of the tobacco industry.

Explaining the hazardous impact of tobacco on human health, a veteran oncologist working at a city-based hospital, Dr Sanjib Kumar Mishra said that tobacco not only causes cancer but also it invites several non-cancerous diseases like chronic bronchitis, bronchiectasis and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Mishra also elucidated how tobacco has a deadly effect on non-smokers.

“Second-hand smoke exposure has also been implicated in adverse health outcomes, causing 1.2 million deaths annually. Nearly half of all children breathe air polluted by tobacco smoke and 65 000 children die each year due to illnesses related to second-hand smoke. Smoking while pregnant can lead to several life-long health conditions for babies,” Mishra added.

Heated tobacco products contain tobacco and expose users to toxic emissions, many of which cause cancer and are harmful to health, he added.

The e-cigarettes even without containing tobacco are also harmful to health, the doctor added.

The veteran physician issued some tips to keep children away from the use of tobacco. He advised them to avoid using tobacco in front of children. The use of tobacco at home or in society has also a negative effect on the children.

Mishra also went against the advertisement on tobacco products as children are more influenced by them.
