Bhubaneswar: The Commissionerate Police arrested five accused, including a woman from Jharkhand, for allegedly kidnapping her live-in partner, Somnath Swain, and demanding a ransom of Rs 10 lakh.
The incident occurred in the Jharpada area under Laxmi Sagar police station. According to Police Commissioner Suresh Dev Datta Singh, Somnath’s sister lodged a complaint at the police station after he went missing. The police registered a case and formed three teams to rescue Somnath. Police utilised mobile phone data, sought public help, and previous incident reports to crack the case.
The accused woman, who was in a live-in relationship with Somnath, had become suspicious of his character and planned to extort money from him before breaking up. She enlisted the help of her sister’s lover and three other youths to kidnap Somnath.
After a 12-hour operation, the police arrested the five accused from a hotel near SUM Hospital and rescued Somnath. The police had initially told the woman that they were making arrangements to pay the ransom, but she became suspicious and refused to cooperate.
The successful operation demonstrates the Commissionerate Police’s efficiency in cracking down on crime and bringing perpetrators to justice.
