Bhubaneswar: A youth impersonating a police officer was arrested on Monday for allegedly duping several persons by promising jobs in the Talcher coal mine and collecting lakhs of rupees from them.
The accused has been identified as Biranchi Nayak, a resident of Kunjam village Khamar Police Station.
According to reports, the arrest was made after a complaint was filed by Mantu Sahoo, a youth from Kankarei village. In his complaint, Sahoo alleged that Nayak had introduced himself as a police officer and promised him employment at the Talcher coal mine. He was asked to pay Rs 24,000 as the first installment.
When the job offer failed to materialise, Sahoo approached Angul Sadar Police Station. Acting on the complaint, police launched an investigation and arrested Nayak.
During the operation, police recovered Rs 50,000 in cash, a motorcycle, a police uniform, cap, badges, stamps, and fake identity cards from the accused’s possession.
Further investigation is underway to determine the extent of the fraud and identify other potential victims.
