Koraput: The Jeypore Special POCSO Court on Wednesday sentenced a youth Sundar Jani of Nuaguda village to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment (RI) and imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 after convicting him for raping a minor girl in 2018 in B Singhpur police limits of Borigumma block in Koraput district.
In default to pay the fine, convict Jani has to undergo RI for six months more, the court has ruled in its verdict.
The Court has ordered the District Legal Services Authority to pay a compensation of Rs 5 lakh to the victim.
The court pronounced the verdict after recording the statements of 10 witnesses and 19 relevant documents.
According to the case details, on September 28, 2018, while the victim had gone to a pond near her house to take a bath, Jani raped her. On returning to her home, the victim narrated her ordeal to her father. A meeting was held in the village wherein Jani confessed to his crime and agreed to take the victim to his house. After staying with the victim for six months Jani drove her out of his home.
Following the development, the victim lodged an FIR at the Jeypore Mahila police station.
The then IIC of Jeypore Mahila police station Tillottama Nayak investigated the matter and submitted a charge sheet against Sundar Jani in court.
