Puri: Police have detained a youth for climbing atop the Nata Mandap (dancing hall) of Shree Jagannath Temple here today.
The youth has been identified as Rakesh Hazra of West Bengal. Rakesh was sighted by a Chunra sevayat (temple servitor) while he had climbed atop the Nata Mandap through the Ghanti Dwara. He was rescued by the Chunra sevayat with the help of police and Fire Service personnel.
He has been detained at the Singha Dwara police station. The exact reason behind his climbing the Nata Mandap is not known.
Worth mentioning, a few days back a man had vandalized hearths inside the Rosha Ghara (the temple kitchen) and a transgender had committed suicide by jumping from the Gumuta of the Shree Jagannath temple.
Such incidents in quick succession have raised doubts over the safety and security of the 12th century shrine.
