Bhubaneswar: A young man from Biripur village in Ganjam district’s Khalikote block allegedly died due to a delay in availing treatment after the 108 ambulance transporting him broke down en route.
The deceased has been identified as Shankar Maharana.
According to reports, the incident occurred while he was playing cricket in a nearby field, where he was hit in the stomach by a ball around 4 pm, leading to his collapse. He was immediately rushed to Khalikote Hospital.
Due to his worsening condition, doctors at Khalikote Hospital referred him to MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur for specialised treatment. He was shifted to Berhampur in an 108 ambulance around 11 pm.
However, the ambulance broke down at Khalikote Ghat. After a gruelling three-hour wait, another ambulance arrived, and Shankar was finally admitted to MKCG Hospital at 4 am. By the time he was admitted, it was too late, and doctors declared him dead on arrival.
The family blamed the delay caused by the ambulance breakdown for Shankar’s untimely demise and demanded a thorough investigation into the incident.
