Balasore: The body of a youth who had jumped into Kantiachara river in Balasore district yesterday, in order to avoid getting caught by excise sleuths for smuggling liquor, was recovered after around 10 hours today.
The deceased has been identified as Sapan Majhi (20) of Puruna Balasore in the district.
Reportedly, Sapan and some other youths were smuggling liquor on five motorcycles yesterday when they were intercepted by a mobile squad of the Excise Department on Salt Road.
The mobile squad was able to nab three of them but Sapan and few others managed to flee from the spot on their motorcycles. When the squad chased Majhi, he left his motorcycle and jumped into the river to evade arrest.
As a result, Sapan got swept away due to the strong currents in the river. On getting information, his family members and fire brigade, along with locals, conducted a search operation in the river.
However, his body was found by some villagers today morning on the banks of the river near Gopalpur village under Khantapada police limits.
