Bhubaneswar: A youth accused of brutally killing his minor girlfriend in Nayagarh district succumbed while undergoing treatment at AIIMS Bhubaneswar, bringing a tragic end to a shocking incident that has stunned the region.
The deceased youth has been identified as Purna Nayak of Magarabandh village under Sarankul police station limits of Nayagarh district.
According to reports, Purna was admitted to AIIMS here in critical condition after consuming poison following the crime. Despite medical efforts, he died during treatment. Earlier, the minor girl had died at the Nayagarh District Headquarters Hospital.
The incident took place on Monday near the Binayakpur Shiva temple. Reports suggest that Purna had been in a one-sided relationship with the minor girl, a resident of the same village, for nearly two years. The girl’s family had reportedly raised concerns with Purna’s parents earlier, alleging that he repeatedly harassed her while she was going to school and tuition. However, no effective intervention took place.
On the day of the incident, while the minor girl was on her way to attend tuition classes, Purna allegedly intercepted her near the temple and assaulted her by striking her on the head with an iron pipe. He then forcibly made her consume poison. After the attack, Purna also consumed poison himself.
Local youths rushed both of them to the Nayagarh District Headquarters Hospital. Doctors declared the minor girl brought dead, while Purna was admitted in a critical condition. As news of the incident spread, tension prevailed at the hospital premises.
Given his deteriorating condition, Purna was later referred to AIIMS Bhubaneswar, where he eventually died.
Police have launched a detailed investigation into the incident, examining allegations of prolonged harassment and the circumstances leading to the crime. The case has once again raised serious concerns about stalking, one-sided relationships, and the safety of minors.
