Cuttack: In a tragic incident, a youth drowned in the Chandan Pokhari within the premises of Sishu Bhawan situated near Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) last evening while his body could be retrieved today morning.
The deceased has been identified as Rajkishore Parida of Jaunliapatti under Purighat Police Station (PS) limits.
Soon after the mishap, the locals had alerted the police following which both the police personnel of Purighat PS and ODRAF team had rushed and launched rescue operation in the evening hours itself. As the pond is very deep, it could not have been possible for the team to rescue the victim. However, today morning, the ODRAF team re-launched a frantic search operation and the body could be fished out eventually.
Locals complained that the deep pond is a vulnerable spot and adjacent to the children’s park. Neither has it been properly barricaded nor any watchman deployed there to avert any such mishap.
An aggrieved citizen of the locality Dipayan Pattnaik narrated, “This is Chandan pond inside the children’s park here. Last evening we received information that a youth has fallen into it. Some of our locals rushed here, but he couldn’t be rescued. As it’s very deep, more than 30 feet, the ODRAP team wasn’t successful in their rescue operation last evening. Today morning, the body could be fished out.”
“A problem has been plaguing this dangerous spot since long despite our frequent complaints lodged with the Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) authorities for the precautions as the pond and children’s park are in close proximity. Even though lots of funds have been expended here under the AMRUT scheme, no precaution of barricading around the pond has been made. Not even provision has been made for a lifebuoy tube,” he complained fuming further, “Had it been, the youth could have been saved yesterday itself soon after the mishap,”
