Balasore: A youth, allegedly involved in inter-state cattle smuggling, died after jumping off a bridge near Rajghat checkpoint here late on Saturday night. The youth jumped into Subarnarekha river from the bridge, which led to his death.
The incident took place while the police had mounted surveilance on Odisha – West Bengal border area. The cattle was being smuggled to Midnapore from Bhadrak, said reports.
Police rescued around 200 cattle from three containers and has detained nine persons in this connection. Around one lakh cash was also recovered from another vehicle.
A case has been registered and probe initiated into the incident. There was an altercation between the police and the smugglers, reports said. An SUV escorting the vehicle had cash stashed in it.
