Bhubaneswar: Police arrested a youth for blackmailing a young woman on the pretext of marrying her in Khandagiri area in Bhubaneswar.
The accused identified as Soumya Ranjan Mishra, a resident of Jagatsinghpur impersonated himself as a naval officer and proposed to the woman on a matrimony site. Later, her family members contacted Soumya and he furnished the fake personal details.
Giving false biodata, Soumya managed to trap the woman and her family members. He also enticed the victim to keep physical relationship on the pre-text of marriage. Soumya video-graphed their intimate moment and later started blackmailing the girl.
When she and her family members knew the truth, they broke the marriage proposal. Soumya once called the woman to a hotel near Khandagiri in the city and tortured her by threatening to make videos viral on the internet if she broke the relationship.
Soumya also allegedly used the videos and pics to disrupt the other marriage proposals of the victim girl.
The family members of the victim ultimately moved to Mahila police station and lodged an FIR against the accused.
Based on the complaint, police registered a case and arrested the accused.
He also confessed to his crime during interrogation. Police continued further investigation into the matter.
