Balasore: Sixteen-year-old Monalisa Mandal of Odisha has set an example for others by not only braving cancer and appearing for her matriculation examination but clearing it with 80 percent result.
A resident of Juari village under Alumeda panchayat of Balasore district, Monalisa was diagnosed with bone cancer in her right hand in 2018. It had shattered the dreams of her family as she was a bright student and aspired to become a teacher.
However, Monalisa had not given up yet. After the operation, she resumed her studies. Three months prior to her matriculation exam, the condition of her right hand worsened and she was not able to write with it but it did’nt deter Monalisa.
She appeared for the exam with her left hand and scored 80 per cent by securing 480 marks. But the cancer still remains a hurdle in pursuing her dream. She was undergoing treatment at AIIMS, Bhubaneswar which was discontinued due to COVID-19 pandemic. Her parents have sought that the government may arrange for her treatment.
