Sudhakar Majhi, The Odia Choreographer Who Made It Big In Bollywood
Bhubaneswar: What it takes for an easy-going yet passionate village lad from Balasore to grow up to be an acclaimed Bollywood choreographer? Anybody can dance, but it takes talent, skills and that x-factor to make someone grove to your rhythm.
The person being talked about is an Odia choreographer who has made a mark in Bollywood.
Sudhakar Majhi, 44, is a known name in Mumbai today. He is a frequent collaborator of some well-known personalities of the film industry like Sanjay Dutt, Varun Dhawan, Sajid Wajid, Sunidhi Chauhan, and Kumar Sanu, to name a few.
Sudhakar was born and raised in Balasore’s Padagan. The son of late Karunakar Majhi, Sudhakar grew up during the time in which India was witnessing the ‘MTV revolution’.
In an exclusive interview to OMMCOM NEWS, Sudhakar said, “In that era, artist like Prabhu Deva and Ganesh Acharya were making their mark with songs like ‘Urvashi’ and ‘Hummaa Hummaa’. This was the time, in which a major cultural and artistic shift took place in India.”
“Today everything starts with our smartphones. But if you are a non-millennial, you might remember the time when this was not the case. Television was the all-knowing and everything for us. The trends, fashion, haircut and dance moves, all started and ended in the TV,” said Sudhakar.
Initially the events and competition of his village / town ‘Padagan’, gave sudhakar the much needed platform and the confidence to explore his talents. He always knew that dance was the only medium in which he can express himself.
Someone once said, “We can’t choose the music the life plays for use but we can choose how we dance to it.”
It didn’t take long before the passion for dance made its way through Sudhakar’s heart and altered his life to the point of no return. At that point nothing else mattered, but the pursuit of that goal.
Raised into a loving family and a supporting father, he still couldn’t just start his journey, not until he fulfilled a promise made to his father, to complete studies.
“Do whatever you want, do anything that you like but first complete your graduation. Passion will take you wherever you want to go but education is something that will make you grow,” “these were my father’s words,” he said.
In 1995, after completing his Bachelors in Science, Sudhakar set off for his journey and at the age of 23 on December 22, 1999 he reached Mumbai.
A cesspool for all artists alike and so the struggle began. Like his father’s words his passion did take him places. It was not long before he started his own dance academy at Andheri (West) known to all as ‘Sudhakar Dance Academy’.
The academy to this day is Sudhakar’s pride and gave him all the satisfaction that all dancers crave for. Sudhakar’s motto was simple to promote his own form of art and to teach anyone who want to learn. Till this day there have been many TV and Movies personalities who have visited the academy for guidance.
There was an unforeseen blessing that came out of the academy as well. It made Sudhakar a known name in the industry. In 2006, Sudhakar got a chance to perform with Kumar Sanu and Varsha Usgaonkar for an event in appreciation of Jaipur police.
As time went by, he went on to work as the directors and choreographer for leading actors. Like Varun Dhawan, Mika Singh, Sonu Nigam, Sahid Maliha, Anand Raj Anand, Harry Anand, Bhoomi Trivedi, international shows with Catrina Lopez, all India event with music-duo Sajid Wajid, Sukhvinder Singh, and Mamta Sharma, to name a few.
He directed and choreographed the V-fest 2015. Recently he has been working as a director on the international music video “I was Lost” for Vevo. It’s currently in the post productions stage and is being internationally released on 18 September.
Today, Sudhakar is a renowned choreographer in the Bollywood with 16 years of rich experience. This 44-year-old Odia has already choreographed more than 300 live shows with Bollywood’s leading performers and overseas artists. Sudhakar Dance Academy in Andheri West is a known name in the dance and music circles of Mumbai today.
