Sumitra fought with poverty and abuse and found her love for rugby at Bhubaneswar-based Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS). She started playing the sport in 2009 and within a decade led India in Asia Rugby U-20 Women’s Seven Series held in Vientiane, Laos.
All of 20, she is popularly known as ‘Rugby Rani’ at her native in Jajpur district. Sumitra Nayak, through her struggle and determination, has inspired several young girls to break the proverbial glass ceiling.
