**Bhubaneswar:** A police constable was arrested for abusing and thrashing doctors and nurses at Capital Hospital here alleging medical negligence towards his pregnant wife.
The accused, identified as Mohamad Mansur, manhandled the medical staff inside the labour room of the Government-run hospital.
The wife of the constable was admitted to the hospital after she went into labour pains.
When her labour pain grew, the constable, who was in an inebriated condition, started abusing doctors and nurses present inside the labour room alleging negligence in treatment.
Not satisfied with this, the unruly cop also took out his service gun and threatened to shoot the staff if they do not attend her wife immediately and help in subsiding her pain.
On being informed, police and security staff rushed to the spot and caught hold of the man and brought the situation into normalcy.
Following this, the medical staff staged a protest demanding immediate arrest of the accused and better security for them.
“Labour pain during pregnancy is normal and it has nothing do with medical negligence. Therefore, everyone should understand it. It’s really unfortunate that a constable had created disturbance inside the labour room. Doctors will lose their focus in treatment if such things continue to happen,” said Capital Hospital Director Chita Ranjan Das.
A case has been registered at Capital Police Station on the basis of a complaint filed by the medical.
Meanwhile, police have started investigation into the matter and interrogation is on.
“We are enquiring into the matter and will examine the CCTV footage,” said Bhubaneswar DCP Satyabrata Bhoi.
