Bhubaneswar: In a bid to tackle the growing issue of stray dogs in the Capital city, the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has launched a mass dog sterilisation drive.
Bhubaneswar Mayor Sulochana Das flagged off the initiative at the BMC headquarters, launching two dedicated vehicles for dog sterilisation.
The sterilisation process will be carried out by the Vets Society for Animal Welfare and Rural Development, a Hyderabad-based organisation. As part of the initiative, 2,000 stray dogs will be sterilised every month. The BMC estimates that there are around 70,000 stray dogs roaming the city, and the initiative will cover all 67 wards.
Mayor Sulochana Das said, “We often receive complaints of people being bitten by stray dogs. This initiative will help us tackle the dog menace and make Bhubaneswar a safer city for its residents. The BMC hopes that this initiative will make a significant impact on the city’s stray dog population and prevent dog bites.
