Sambalpur: One person died of diarrhoea and 49 others are undergoing treatment following the outbreak of the disease at Hirakud in Sambalpur district.
Ten persons have been shifted to Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR) after their condition worsened.
So far, 127 patients have been infected with ‘diarrhoea’ in Sambalpur’s Hirakud in the last two days, informed the Medical Officer In-Charge of Hirakud CHC on Saturday.
The District Health Department has, meanwhile, attributed the supply of contaminated drinking water to the outbreak of diarrhoea at Gurudwarapada, Goudapada, Kalopada, Machhapada, and New Market Colony of Hirakud region.
Chief District Medical Officer, meanwhile, submitted a report to the District Collector. The report stated that water treatment is not being carried out which is why diarrhoea is spreading its tentacles across the Hirakud region. Water samples have been collected from four places. The health department is visiting door-to-door as part of its measures to create awareness among residents. The mobile health unit is keeping its eye on the current situation as part of its measures to prevent the disease from spreading. Residents of the diarrhoea-hit areas have been advised to intake boiled water.
It may be mentioned the consumption of contaminated water led to the outbreak of diarrhoea at Hirakud six months back.
Meanwhile, residents held the district administration responsible for the outbreak of the disease.
“Pipelines laid by the Public Health Department have been damaged due to road repair work. As a result, drinking water is getting polluted and it leads to the outbreak of the disease. Several requests to the administration to repair the pipelines has yielded no results”, alleged residents.
