Bhubaneswar: On the occasion of World Sparrow Day 2025, the Regional Development Council (RDC) at Gunthabandha village in Ganjam district, organized a series of programs aimed at raising awareness about the declining population of house sparrows and the urgent need for their protection.
These awareness campaigns have been ongoing for the past twelve years, covering the districts of Ganjam, Gajapati, and Jagatsinghpur.
This year’s theme for World Sparrow Day, “A Tribute to Nature’s Tiny Messengers”, underscores the vital role sparrows play in maintaining ecological balance and promotes efforts toward their conservation.
The RDC also marked the occasion with a special celebration at Anantai village in Kukudakhandi block, where President Sagar Kumar Patra presided over the event.
The program was graced by the chief guest, Sasmita Biswal, Assistant Conservator of Forests in Berhampur, who spoke on the significance and objectives of the initiative.
The event was further honored by the presence of several distinguished guests, including Kameshwar Biswal, local Sarpanch representative; Nirupama Patra, Samiti Sabhya member; Sanjay Samantray, Asset Management Officer at the Indian Life Insurance Corporation; social workers Kishore Chandra Patra and Padmanabh Das.
In a bid to support local wildlife, artificial shelters, food stations, and water pots were distributed to villagers to help alleviate the thirst of birds and animals.
Additionally, artificial nests were installed at the doors of local homes. As part of a voluntary initiative by Sanjay Patra, water tanks were also established throughout the village to provide relief for animals and birds in the face of the harsh summer heat.
The event saw the active participation of Editor Vijendra Majhi, Treasurer Dharmaraj Patra, Sanjay Patra, Nalinikant Parida, Purushottam Swain, and many local villagers, who collectively contributed to organizing the successful event.
