Bhubaneswar: A 17-year-old youth from Baramunda succumbed to critical injuries at a private hospital here on Monday 86 days after being brutally assaulted with a cricket bat.

The deceased is Prakash Kumar Sahu, a resident of Baramunda.

As per reports, Sahu was injured critically after being attacked with a cricket bat some 86 days back. He died yesterday night while undergoing treatment.

Alleging police inaction and laxity in handling the case, Sahu’s relatives staged a demonstration at Khandigiri Square.

They claimed that multiple youths attacked Sahu. However, police failed to arrest the main accused, allowing them to get anticipatory bail from the Orissa High Court. Apart, Sahu’s family also alleged that the police did not record Sahu’s dying statement.

Khandagiri police had arrested two suspects on July 10, but the main accused is still at large. Meanwhile, Sahu’s family demands included re-arrest of the accused, a probe into police handling of the case, and action against erring officials.

Zone-3 ACP Tapas Pradhan said, “Two persons have been arrested in this connection. Steps will be taken to cancel their bail orders issued by the Orissa High Court.  Accordingly, we will take legal action against the accused connected with the case.”
