Bhubaneswar: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has sought an action taken report from Police Commissioner of the Twin City over a complaint pertaining to illegal detention of a minor boy.
As per the complaint before the NHRC, a 13-year-old boy was detained for three days in a police outpost at SCB Medical College & Hospital, Cuttack and was allegedly tortured by the police.
The minor boy hailing from Jharkhand was detained from April 8 to 10, in connection with a case of mobile theft. A Childline member visited the police station to verify the allegation on April 10 and found the child being held in front of the lock-up.
“Following the intervention of Childline, the police lodged a case and lodged him at a short-stay home in the night. The complainant has further submitted that the police should have produced the boy before the Juvenile Justice Board within 24 hours of the detention, but he was illegally detained and tortured violating his human rights,” the NHRC stated quoting the complaint.
The complainant has requested the Commission to take necessary steps to protect the human rights of the victim and action against the erring public servants. The Commissioner of Police needs to inquire into the allegations and submit an action taken report to the Commission within four weeks, the NHRC said.
