Bhubaneswar: As many as 10 sluice gates of Hirakud dam reservoir were opened on Thursday. The decision was taken by the dam authorities to open 10 gates as heavy rains lashed Chhattisgarh and the upper catchment of the Mahanadi river.
Chief Engineer of Hirakud dam Anand Sahu said the reservoir has been receiving around 4 lakh cusec of rainwater since 6 am. To ease the pressure on the reservoir, 10 gates have been opened.
The gates were opened in two phases. At 9 pm on Thursday night, the reservoir level was 613.79 feet and the dam was receiving more than 3.65 lakh cusec water. The outflow was 1.80 lakh cusec.
The water discharge at Khairmal, Barmul and Munduli was 2.50 lakh cusec, 2.77 lakh cusec and 3.57 lakh cusec respectively.
