Bhubaneswar: Chief Secretary Suresh Chandra Mahapatra today reviewed the flood situation in the State. Following the review meeting, as per the directions of the Chief Secretary, eight sluice gates of Hirakud Dam reservoir were closed.
Total 34 sluice gates of Hirakud dam were opened by Saturday night. Out of these eight gates were closed on Monday afternoon to regulate the outflow of water from the reservoir and check flooding in the downstream of Mahanadi river basin.
At a meeting here in Rajiv Bhavan, Development Commissioner and Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) Pradeep Kumar Jena detailed the present situation arising out of heavy flow of water into Mahanadi by different connecting rivers.
This has been caused by very heavy rainfall in different districts right from Kandhamal to Jagatsinghpur and Kendrapara. Mahapatra also discussed with senior engineers of water resource department and experts of flood management the State.
After reviewing the inputs, Mahapatra was directed to close 8 gates of Hirakud dam for moderating the flood impact in lower end of Mahanadi river system. Mahapatra will review the flood situation again tomorrow morning at 9 AM, reports stated.
