Bhubaneswar: Police rescued more than 150 cows when they were being illegally transported from neighbouring Cuttack district to West Bengal on Thursday night and nabbed two smugglers in this connection.
Acting on a tip-off on illegal transportation of cattle to West Bengal, Khuntuni police intercepted two container vehicles near Khuntuni in Cuttack district late Thursday night.
While checking the trucks, the police found that 150 cattle were being transported to West Bengal in an inhuman manner. The cattle were rescued from the trucks and sent to a local cow shelter.
Police also arrested two persons while others managed to flee the spot. They also seized the two container trucks transporting the cattle.
The police said that the cattle were allegedly being smuggled from the Tigiria area of Cuttack district to Howrah in West Bengal.
A case has been registered against the accused persons for illegally transporting the cattle and further investigation is underway to unearth linkages in the inter-state cattle smuggling.
