Bhubaneswar: With the onset of monsoon in the State, Odisha has witnessed a spurt in dengue cases. As many as 185 positive cases have been identified in 16 districts of the state including Khordha of which Capital Bhubaneswar is a part.

Out of these 96 are from Khordha district, 12 are from Jajpur, 10 are from Balasore and the remaining are from other districts.  This means nearly, 52% of the detected positive cases are from Khordha district.

A total of 11,464 persons were tested for dengue and out of them 185 tested positive.

During the corresponding period last year, 5,981 persons were tested and out of them, 353 had tested positive for dengue.

“As of now 11,486 persons have been tested and out of them, 185 have tested positive for dengue. Out of them, 96 are from Khordha district which includes Bhubaneswar. During the corresponding period last year, 5,981 persons were tested and out of them, 353 had tested positive for dengue. Despite double the number of persons tested the test positivity rate is very low,” informed Public Health Director Dr Niranjan Mishra to reporters.

Dr Mishra said that standard operating procedure (SOP) has been issued for all districts as a precautionary measure.

“All medical colleges, Capital Hospital have been instructed to keep beds, medicine and platelets stock ready for dealing with any kind of emergency. Adequate quantity of medicines, etc have been stocked up. So there is no reason for the people to worry. The reason being death percentage in dengue is around one per cent,” he clarified.

He said the accumulation of rainwater and puddles during monsoon creates a conducive environment for mosquitos to breed.

“We need to clean all the places,” he added.
