Bhubaneswar: In a shocking incident, a youth killed his grandmother with a sharp weapon and injured four others at Gadeigiri village under Baikuda block in Odisha’s Jagatsinghpur district on Tuesday. According to reports, the youth allegedly committed the crime because his family refused to accept his inter-caste marriage.
While the deceased has been identified as Sukhilata Sahoo, two critically injured persons are currently undergoing treatment at SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack.
Bivanjyot Sahu alias Sameer was having an affair with a girl belonging to the Schedule Caste community and married her against the wishes of his family. Following his marriage with the girl, his family refused to allow them to stay in their house.
Sameer had a criminal background and was even sent to jail. A few days back he was released from prison.
On his release, Sameer visited his house and demanded that his family allow him and his wife to stay there. As the family members refused to accept his demand, he attacked his grandmother with a sharp weapon killing her on the spot. Four others, including his mother Eskarani Das, and her neighbour Hemlata Das, were injured when they tried to intervene in the matter. Initially, the injured were rushed to the Jagatsinghpur health center but later shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital as their condition deteriorated.
On being informed by the villagers, police reached the spot and arrested Sameer.
