Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert for heavy to very heavy rain in seven Odisha districts on Friday. According to the weather office, Malkangiri, Koraput, Nabarangapur, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Bolangir, and Nuapada districts are likely to receive heavy rainfall ranging from 7 cm to 20 cm today under the influence of an active low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal.
The low-pressure area formed on Thursday is active today over the north-Odisha coast-adjacent West Bengal coast along the northwest Bay of Bengal. It is likely to move in the west-northwest direction for the next 2 to 3 days and face North Odisha-North Chhattisgarh.
A yellow alert has been issued for 12 districts for moderate to heavy rainfall on Friday. Low-lying areas in several districts may face water logging due to incessant rains since Thursday. The IMD has issued a yellow alert for heavy rain in five districts of Odisha tomorrow.
Meanwhile, the rainfall recorded at seven centers in Odisha from 8:30 am to 5:30 pm is as follows:
- Puri: 66.2 mm
- Bhubaneswar: 57.6 mm
- Balasore: 42.6 mm
- Gopalpur: 35.8 mm
- Chandabali: 16.7 mm
- Paradip: 14.7 mm
- Jharsuguda: 13.4 mm
Meanwhile, Odisha received a 10 per cent deficit in rainfall in the ongoing monsoon season. Among all districts, 11 have reported a scarcity in rainfall, 18 districts have received a moderate amount of rainfall while one district has received excessive rains, the IMD said.
