15 Districts In Odisha Earthquake Prone

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government today revealed that 15 districts in the state are earthquake-prone.

While responding to a written query by Congress member Tara Prasad Bahinipati, Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Sudam Marndi informed this to the State Assembly.

The Minister said as per the data of the Earthquake Hazard Zoning Atlas of India (2016) published by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), Building Materials and Technology Promotion Council (BMPTC), Ministry of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation, 15 districts including Puri, Khurdha, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Jajpur, Dhenkanal, Angul, Deogarh, Sambalpur, Bargarh Jharsuguda,  Sundargarh, Balasore and Mayurbhanj  have been marked as moderate quake-prone (zone 3) areas.

In order to tackle the possible natural calamity, the government has organized various programmes and training camps at the school level.

People in urban areas are also made aware of earthquakes through UEVRP (Urban Earthquake Vulnerability Reduction Programme), he added.

Engineers and masons are imparted special training regarding earthquake-resistant construction. This apart, Earthquake has been included as a subject in primary school curriculum to educate students regarding the disaster.
