Bhubaneswar: An undertrial prisoner died under mysterious circumstances while he was being taken from Rourkela to Bargarh in Odisha along with 12 others on Sunday.
The deceased, identified as Anirban Karji, was a member of a 13-member inter-state gang. All 13 accused are from West Bengal and were lodged in Bargarh prison since September 24.
According to reports, after his condition started deteriorating, the undertrial prisoner was rushed to Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences And Research (VIMSAR) Hospital but doctors at the hospital declared him dead. Incidentally, another undertrial prisoner also fell sick and was admitted to the hospital.
Rourkela SP Mitrabhanu Mohapatra confirmed that the incident took place when the undertrial prisoners were being taken from Bargarh to Rourkela in connection with a cheating case.
