Berhampur: The Government Railway Police (GRP) in Odisha have arrested three persons from Rajasthan for allegedly robbing a gold trader near the Berhampur Railway Station while impersonating officers of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

According to police, gold ornaments weighing 88 grams and valued at around ₹14.80 lakh were recovered from the accused.

The incident occurred on the night of February 25 when the victim, Husmukh Jain (43) from Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh, had arrived at Berhampur by the Konark Express. Around 9.30 pm, Jain and another person were leaving the railway station when at least two unidentified men intercepted them.

The accused allegedly introduced themselves as officers of the CBI and claimed they needed to conduct an enquiry. On this pretext, they forcibly took away Jain’s bag and fled from the spot.

Police said the bag contained two mobile phones and 33 gold ornaments weighing approximately 862.5 grams, along with other valuables.

Following a complaint lodged by the trader, a case was registered at the GRP police station in Berhampur on February 26. During the investigation, a joint team of GRP and Railway Protection Force personnel conducted raids at several locations in Andhra Pradesh and Rajasthan.

The coordinated operation led to the arrest of three suspects from Rajasthan and the recovery of a portion of the stolen gold ornaments.

Sub-Divisional Police Officer of GRP (Khurda), Jagannath Mallick, said more individuals were involved in the crime.

Police said efforts are continuing to trace the remaining suspects and recover the rest of the stolen valuables.
