Bhubaneswar: Even as the capital city of Bhubaneswar was celebrating the Christmas Eve under beefed up security on Sunday, a group of miscreants chased and attacked a youth with sharp weapons near the Airport Traffic Square inflicting grievous injuries on his head, chest and other parts of the body.
The victim has been identified as Madam Maharana alias Shiva and he is currently undergoing treatment at the SCB Medical College and Hospital (SCBMCH).
On early Monday morning, the police arrested eight miscreants allegedly involved with the crime from two places in Bhubaneswar. A hunt is on to nab the remaining miscreants.
According to reports, around 9.30 pm yesterday a group of 30 miscreants chased and attacked Shiva following an argument near the Airport Traffic Square while the bystanders looked on helplessly. Rakesh Guru alias Raka, another youth who was with Shiva at the time of the incident, managed to flee the area and escape unhurt.
Shiva was rescued by locals and rushed to the Capital Hospital. Later, he was shifted to SCBMCH as his condition deteriorated.
The police believe that the attack was a result of an old enmity. A number of cases are registered against Shiva and Raka at different police stations, police said.
