Jajpur: People having high blood sugar are usually told to avoid rice that is rich in carbohydrates. But a new variety of paddy which was grown by a farmer in Binjharpur of Jajpur district will help reduce blood glucose.

Umesh Nayak, who was earlier doing a job in a reputed pharma company with a handsome package, left the company and focused on cultivating the diabetic-free paddy-Sona RNR-15048.

Umesh said he grew the new variety of paddy in one acre of land on a trial basis. Later, he increased the area of cultivation after receiving a bumper harvest. High demand in market also encouraged him to cultivate more, he said.

The special kind of rice is sold for Rs 250/kg in the market. But, Umesh sells it much less than the market price for the benefit of the diabetic patients of his locality.

Carbohydrate content in common paddy variety usually is more than 70 % while the paddy grown by Umesh is reportedly only 51 per cent.

Diabetologists said carbohydrate metabolism doesn’t happen properly in diabetic patients. If a patient having type 2 diabetes consumes this variety of rice, the glycemic index (GI) will be in control. This kind of paddy will be helpful for glycemic control in blood sugar.

The rice also helps fight cardiovascular diseases, they said.

Research on the new variety of paddy also says that it is effective in controlling type 2 diabetes.

The RNR-15048 was first developed by the Telangana Agriculture University claiming that the new kind of paddy is most authentic diabetic-friendly developed in the country.

It is also farmer-friendly grain that gives yield within a short span of time from 120 to 130 days.
