Malkangiri: The annual migratory bird census was completed on Thursday in six forest divisions of the district.
At the end of the counting by 10 teams, it was found that there were 11,554 birds of 55 species at the different reservoirs and rivers in the district. Of these, 3,498 birds were counted in Malkangari Satiguda reservoir.
Among them are the Large Whistling Duck, Intermediate Egret, Indian Pond Heron, Little Cormorant, Flung Fossils, Great Cormorant, Phallocrocoraz cobo, White Block, Little Grebe Tachybaptus ruficollis, Red-necked Grebe Padreceps grice xena and others.
Similarly, 665 migratory birds were counted in Chittarakonda reservoir, 5,551 in Mathuli Shivsagar, 152 in Saberi in Motu, 152 in Sileru Sangamsharun Mugipoeting, 1,321 in Kalimela Fisheries Department dam, 367 in Balimela Solurkonda Barrage, 3 in Balimela Reservoir Dike. Satiguda Dam in Malkangiri forest, Shiva Sagar in Matuli forest, and Balimela Mati Dam in Chittagong witnessed the highest arrival of migratory birds.
As compared to the previous years, this year more migratory birds, especially exotic species, arrived in Malkangiri.
