Bhubaneswar: The injured tusker, which was treated by a team of veterinary experts, succumbed to injuries in Bharatpur area of Chandaka wildlife sanctuary on Monday mid-night.
The tusker suffered critical injuries after consuming a crude bomb planted by poachers to hunt wild boar in the forest. The mouth of the pachyderm was severely affected in the bomb blast.
The tongue and tooth were destroyed in the blast. The elephant was spotted by the forest officials on Monday in the forest.
A special team from OUAT and Nandankanan was engaged in the treatment of the jumbo. Despite all the efforts of the veterinarians, the animal died late on Monday night.
The elephant was believed to have come from Khurda forest area.
The Forest department has launched an investigation into the circumstances that led to the death of the elephant.
