Sundargarh: A piece of good news for wildlife lovers. A black panther has been again spotted in Hemgir forest under Odisha’s Sundargarh Forest Division after a gap of six years.

According to Pradeep Mirase, DFO Sundargarh, “Last week, we found the evidence of the presence of black panther again in Garjanpahad Reserve Forest (RF) area of Hemgir forest through camera trap.”

The Sundargarh DFO added that it is a very good sign suggesting that the quality of Hemgir forest is still good, despite heavy pressure due to mining in nearby areas.

The DFO informed that honey badger, civet cat, rusty spotted cat, peacock, mongoose, bear, porcupine,  barking deer, hare, wild boar, jungle hen, black cat, fox, etc., along with the black panther were also spotted through camera trap.

Mirase has stated that in 2018, a black panther was spotted through a camera trap in the Hemgir range of Sundargarh Forest Division. However, he added that no signs of it could be found after that.
