Bhubaneswar: Tension ran high at Helipad Square on Puri-Konark Road following the death of a biker on Tuesday morning.
The deceased has been identified as Chandrabhaga Traders’ Association President Bhaskar Behera. Behera was going to his hotel from his home on his bike when he came in contact with a 33KV live wire hanging from an electric pole and this led to the death of Behera on the very spot.
Behera’s death sparked tension with irate locals staging road blockage on Puri-Konark Road. The protesters alleged that their repeated requests to the Energy Department to shift the electric pole from the road several times yielded no results. The department is yet to wake from its slumber and take necessary action to avoid mishaps on the spot.
Due to the road blockade, hundreds of vehicles were stuck on Konark-Chandrabhaga Road much to the inconvenience of tourists who have come to visit Puri and Konark. There was no escape for passengers who were left stranded on the road.
Meanwhile, Chandrabhaga police, Ramchandi police and Konark police have reached the spot and are trying to pacify the agitating locals.
