Bhubaneswar: With the formation of a low-pressure area over the Southwest Bay of Bengal coast, the Meteorological Centre has predicted that it is very likely to concentrate into a depression over central parts of the Bay of Bengal on May 24.

“It is very likely to move north-eastwards and concentrate into a depression over central parts of the Bay of Bengal by the morning of 24th May. It would continue to move north-eastwards and intensify further thereafter”, read the release issued by the regional office of IMD.

Going by latest IMD report, squally weather with wind speed reaching 35-45 kmph gusting to 55 kmph is likely over the south Bay of Bengal on May 22. It would gradually increase wind speed reaching 60 kmph and 70kmph over central and adjoining south Bay of Bengal on May 23 and May 24.

Under its impact, sea condition is likely to be moderate to rough over the southwest Bay of Bengal on May 22 and rough to very rough over the central and adjoining south Bay of Bengal from May 23 onwards.

The Met Office has said that the low pressure would trigger heavy rainfall on May 25 in some places.

Keeping the alert issued by the Met office in mind, the Odisha government has alerted district collectors to remain prepared to meet any eventuality. Fishermen have also been advised not to venture into the sea.

On the other hand, Odisha is still reeling under gruelling heatwave conditions and there would be norwesters rains. Under the impact of Kalabaisakhi, coastal and north Odisha will experience rainfall with thunderstorms.

Meanwhile, the weather department has issued a yellow warning to Balasore district for heavy rainfall.
