Bhubaneswar: Outbreak of diarrhoea in Rayagada and Koraput districts is reported to have claimed one life and left 44 persons hospitalized.

The deceased has been identified as Gopal Kandamaka.

According to sources, Gopal was rushed to Muniguda Community Health Centre after he complained of loose motion. As his condition deteriorated, he was shifted to Rayagada District Headquarters where he reportedly died of the disease while undergoing treatment.

Among the four affected persons in Rayagada, one has been undergoing treatment at Muniguda Government Hospital while three others are being treated at Christian Hospital at Bisamkatak.

The condition of Kumari Mandika, Milan Mandika and Kabita Sabar is stated to be critical.

Koraput district too registered a spurt in diarrhoea cases. According to sources, as many as 40 residents of Sabai village under Semiliguda block in the district are undergoing treatment.

Concerned over the sudden rise of diarrhoea cases, the Health Department has sent a medical team to the village to take stock of the situation. The team is also investigating the reasons behind the spread of the contagious disease.

Intake of contaminated water is stated to be the reason behind the spread of the water-borne disease.

Chief District Medical Officer informed bleaching powder has been sprinkled in the affected areas as part of measures to contain the disease from spreading its tentacles. Besides, the medical team has collected water samples to know the reason behind the diarrhoea outbreak. However, the situation is under control.

Meanwhile, the Semiliguda block development officer visited the ailing persons.
