Bhubaneswar: Ranpur MLA Surama Pandhy filed nomination for Speaker of the Odisha Legislative Assembly on Wednesday.
According to sources, Padhy filed nomination for the coveted post in the presence of Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and Deputy CMs K V Singhdeo, Pravati Parida and other BJP MLAs.
The election for the post is slated to be held tomorrow after the oath-taking ceremony of the members of the House.
BJP MLAs held a meeting today following which Padhy was selected as the party’s candidate for the post of Speaker.
If elected, Padhy will be the second woman after Pramila Mallik to hold the Speaker post in the Odisha Legislative Assembly.
Meanwhile, Ranendra Pratap Swain, an eight-time BJD MLA from the Athagarh Assembly constituency, is functioning as the Pro-tem speaker. Earlier on Friday, Swain took oath as Pro-tem Speaker. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi among others attended the Pro-tem Speaker’s oath-taking ceremony at the Raj Bhawan.
