BMC Blames Lack Of Coordination For City Water Logging

Bhubaneswar: The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has attributed the waterlogging in the city to lack of coordination among various departments.

Speaking on the waterlogging in several key places in Bhubaneswar in the first spell of rain on Wednesday, BMC Mayor Sulachana Das today said drainage is in the hands of various departments. Lack of coordination among various departments is required to resolve the drainage issues. A compressive plan is needed to sort out the water logging problems, Das pointed out.

There is a need to clear the main Gangua nullha which all drains and sub-drains are connected to. Only 32 KM of drainage is under the purview of the BMC. But the remaining parts of several drainages belong to outside the city. The civic bodies outside the BMC should also work proactively to clear the choked drains that passed through the capital city. The Daya West canal should also be cleaned and garbage-free, she added.

An all-out effort and well-coordination are needed for the smooth passage of excess rainwater, she maintained.  Now, there is a need of culverts at 11 places in the city and disposal points, she said.

As many as 12 sensitive places have been identified which get waterlogged in a spell of rain. The civic body is taking steps to evict illegal encroachment and blocking of drainage, she said.

On Wednesday, several low-lying areas in the city witnessed waterlogging including the NH 16 that passed through the Capital city.

The residents came down on the civic body for the lack of preparedness that is responsible for the waterlogging.
