Bhubaneswar: The Minister of Commerce and Transport Department, Bibhuti Bhusan Jena, inaugurated the Intelligent Enforcement Management System (IEMS) at Malatipatpur in Puri district on Sunday.
Jena inaugurated the advanced traffic monitoring system in the presence of Amitabh Thakur, Commissioner of State Transport Authority, Additional Transport Commissioners Indramani Nayak, Lalmohan Sethi, and Dipti Ranjan Patra, along with Joint Transport Commissioner Pradeep Kumar Mohanty and other senior officials.
“The Intelligent Enforcement Management System (IEMS) would help in reducing accidents,” said the Minister while addressing officials during the event.
Amid rapidly developing road infrastructure, the volume of vehicular traffic has significantly increased, leading to more road accidents and traffic violations.
The sophisticated traffic monitoring system will use advanced cameras, radar, speed monitoring devices, and other technologies to identify violators and take prompt action against motorists.
In collaboration with the Government of India, the State government has initiated the implementation of the Intelligent Traffic Management System (IEMS).
Rs 88 crore has been allocated for the next five years to support this initiative.
The first phase incorporates 548 kilometres of both state and national highways. The roads covered in this phase include Panikoili to Rameshwar, Bhubaneswar to Puri, Puri to Konark, and Konark to Pipili.
To combat challenges in enforcing traffic laws on national highways due to limited manpower, the Government of India has prioritized leveraging technology. The Motor Vehicles Act of 2021 introduced amendments facilitating the use of advanced technologies to prosecute offenders.
One such initiative is the Integrated Enforcement Management System (IEMS), aimed at enhancing enforcement capabilities.
IEMS represents a pivotal advancement towards effectively implementing legal actions against violators of the Motor Vehicles Act through state-of-the-art scientific approaches.
