National Handicraft Day

Bhubaneswar: The Department of Handlooms, Textiles & Handicrafts today observed the 10th National Handicraft Day, recognizing the significant contributions of handloom weavers to Odisha’s cultural heritage and economy.

Principal Secretary Dr. Arabinda Kumar Padhee inaugurated the event at Jayadev Bhawan, acknowledging the state’s rich tradition and the weavers’ vast contributions to the Indian textile industry.

Dr. Padhee highlighted the state government’s commitment to supporting and promoting the handicraft sector through financial assistance, skill development programs, and other initiatives. He emphasized the importance of respecting and preserving the weaving and handloom culture, which is an integral part of Odisha’s identity.

The day commemorates the launch of the Swadeshi Movement in 1905, which aimed to promote indigenous products and self-sufficiency. Four eminent handloom weavers – Suresh Kumar, Shambhunath Senapati, Bhagwati Sisa, and Jalandhar Meher – were felicitated for their exceptional craftsmanship, reflecting the rich heritage and weaving skills of their respective regions.

Odisha’s handicraft tradition is renowned for its exquisite designs and craftsmanship, with famous products like Sambalpuri, Tasar, Bomkai, Maniabandh, and Brahampuri sarees. The event aimed to create awareness about the importance of handicrafts and their contribution to social and economic development, both domestically and internationally.
