Bhubaneswar: Odisha’s Nandankanan Zoological Park welcomed a pair of giraffes – a male and a female – from the Alipore Zoological Garden in Kolkata and received under an animal exchange programme. The male giraffe is 1 year and 5 months old, while the female giraffe is 1 year and 1 month old.
With the acquisition of the two new animals, the population of giraffe in Nandankanan has gone up to 3.
As bringing giraffes by road was difficult, the zoo authorities had to take precautions. A team from Nandankanan zoo conducted a preliminary survey of the route and identified threat locations. Subsequently, they designed a transportation plan and made quarantine space for the giraffes to be brought in coordination with the Collectors, SPs and DFOs en route.
The team started its journey from Kolkata with the giraffes on August 31 night and reached Nandankanan Zoological Park after 25 hours.
