Koraput District Hit Hard By Heavy Rainfall: Initial Reports Suggest 1,000 Houses Damaged

Koraput: Jeypore block in Koraput district has been severely affected by heavy rainfall, disrupting normal life. Continuous downpours over the last two days have resulted in extensive damage, with approximately 1,000 houses destroyed or severely impacted.

As per the initial report, over 50 houses have been damaged in villages like Jamunda, Phampuni, Balia, Tankua, and Anta under Jeypore block and the number of damaged houses may increase, said Jeypore BDO Shakti Mohaptra adding that polythene sheets have been distributed to the affected families.

Similarly, 88 houses have been damaged at Jeypore tehsil so far. Waterlogging has been reported in agricultural fields in Umuri, Ambaguda, Jeypore, Dhanpur, Balipujariput, Randapilli, and Jamunda areas. Besides, a tree has been uprooted in the Christianpeta area. Markets and shops remain closed due to the heavy rainfall, and people are unable to venture out.

Meanwhile, Jeypore MLA Tara Prasad Bahinipati visited the flood-affected areas and took stock of the situation. He said that he would bring the matter to the notice of the government and assured the residents of necessary assistance.

Over 1,000 houses have been damaged in the district, and people are taking shelter in relief camps. The Koraput district administration has declared a holiday for all schools due to the heavy rainfall warning issued by the IMD department. In Jeypore town, two houses have been damaged, and polythene sheets have been provided to the affected families, according to the municipal executive officer, Siddharth Pattanaik.

The Jeypore tehsildar Sabyasachi Jena informed that the assessment of crop damage will be done after the rain subsides.
