Bhubaneswar: In a bid to provide a more comfortable and seamless experience of darshan for devotees, the Odisha government has initiated a plan to install air-conditioning in the ‘Nata Mandap’ (audience hall) of the sacred Shree Jagannath Temple in Puri.

This initiative aims to provide a more serene and comfortable environment for devotees to offer their prayers and have hassle-free darshan, especially during peak seasons. By introducing air-conditioning, the government will mitigate the challenges devotees face due to overcrowding and heat.

A decision in this regard was taken by the Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA). Following extensive consultations with all relevant stakeholders, the responsibility of the air-conditioning project has been entrusted to a joint committee comprising the Shree Jagannath Temple Administration, Puri District Collector, and Superintendent of Police. This collaborative effort ensures a cohesive approach to enhancing the devotee experience at the revered temple, sources said.

To further facilitate a smooth and accessible experience for all devotees, separate queues will be designated for elderly visitors, ensuring their comfort and convenience. Additionally, the temple administration will relocate large boxes and Almirhas from the audience hall to create more space and ease movement. However, it is yet to be decided whether barricades or human chains system will be placed inside the temple.

The introduction of air-conditioning in the ‘Nata Mandap’ is a welcome relief for devotees, especially for senior citizens, who often face discomfort and suffocation during the darshan of the sibling deities. And devotees are looking forward to benefiting from this upgrade, said a devotee.
