Bhubaneswar: In a daring heist, bike-borne miscreants looted a jewellery shop at Mohana market in Gajapati district, making off with gold jewellery weighing approximately one kilogram, along with silver ornaments and a substantial amount of cash on Wednesday night.
According to reports, the store owner identified as Mohan Rao Achary downed the shutter of his shop around 9 pm and left a bag containing valuable items outside. The miscreants, who arrived on a bike, snatched the bag containing 1 kg gold, 5 kg silver and Rs. 70,000 in cash from Rao and decamped.
The trader filed a complaint at the Mohana police station. Based on the complaint, police have launched an investigation and are scrutinizing CCTV footage from nearby cameras to arrest the culprits.
In a separate incident, miscreants burgled a house at Singhasal village under Barkote police station in Deogarh district on Wednesday night and fled with items including 200 grams of gold jewellery, silver ornaments and Rs. 95,500 in cash.
According to the complaint, Khetrabasi Dalabehera had taken his ailing wife, Yajnaseni Pradhan, to Rourkela for medical treatment. Meanwhile, taking advantage of the empty house, miscreants targeted his residence. The incident occurred during the daytime when the house was locked.
Dalabehera filed a complaint at the Barkote police station, and an investigation is underway.
