Bhubaneswar: Justice Sanjiv Khanna has been appointed as the next Chief Justice of India (CJI) by President Droupadi Murmu, following the recommendation of outgoing Chief Justice DY Chandrachud. The oath-taking ceremony will take place on November 11, 2024.

Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal announced the appointment on X (formerly Twitter) this evening, stating: “In exercise of the power conferred by the Constitution of India, Hon’ble President, after consultation with Hon’ble Chief Justice of India, is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Sanjiv Khanna, Judge of the Supreme Court of India, as Chief Justice of India with effect from 11th November, 2024.”

Justice Khanna, who was elevated to the Supreme Court in 2019 from the Delhi High Court, will serve as CJI until his retirement on May 13, 2025.

During his tenure on the Supreme Court, Justice Khanna has been involved in several landmark rulings. He was part of the Constitution Bench that struck down the controversial Electoral Bonds scheme, which allowed anonymous donations to political parties. He also played a key role in the bench that upheld the abrogation of Article 370, which revoked the special status of Jammu & Kashmir.

Additionally, in July 2024, a bench led by Justice Khanna granted interim bail to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in the money laundering case linked to the Delhi liquor policy.
