Koraput: The Jeypore Chamber of Commerce has called for a 12-hour shutdown of all business establishments in the city today. This drastic measure is in response to the alleged harassment of local jeweller Haraprasad Rao, who tragically died of a heart attack after a raid by Central GST (CGST) and State Tax officials.
The chamber is protesting the excessive stress and pressure caused by the raid, which they believe led to Rao’s untimely demise. However, the shutdown, which excludes schools, colleges, government offices, private institutions, and pharmacies, will also keep public transportation services operational.
According to reports, Rao’s jewellery shop was raided by CGST sleuths on Tuesday during the Dhanteras festival, causing him immense stress and anxiety, ultimately leading to his demise. The shutdown is being observed to protest the alleged high-handedness of the tax officials and to demand a more sensitive approach towards businessmen.
Rao’s brother has alleged that the raid was unnecessary and harassment, which led to his elder brother’s death.
“The CGST officials raided our shop without any prior notice or valid reason, causing my brother immense stress. He was worried about the consequences and was under tremendous pressure,” said Rao’s brother.
The Chamber of Commerce has condemned the harassment and demanded action against the officials responsible.
