Bhubaneswar: The Ministry of Earth Sciences will install three new Doppler Weather Radars (DWRs) in Odisha to improve weather forecasting operations, as informed by the Director General of the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), Dr. Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, on Monday.
The IMD organised a talk series to celebrate its 150th anniversary in the capital city on Monday.
During the event, Dr. Mohapatra shared with the media that a total of 126 Doppler Weather Radars will be installed across India by 2026.
He emphasised the importance of visiting the MausamGram website and installing the Mausam mobile app, which provides weather forecasts. Users can enter the name of their locality or any other place to access the precise weather information, thanks to the system’s Geographical Information System (GIS). This is a recent development to improve weather forecasting.
“Currently, there are 73 radars operational in India, and 53 new radars will be installed soon, of which three will be set up in Bhubaneswar, Balasore, and Sambalpur in Odisha,” said Mohapatra.
Dr. Mohapatra also mentioned that the Doppler radar in Bhubaneswar will offer crucial data on urban flooding, artificial flooding, and air quality in the city.
