Bhubaneswar: As many as 30 families were affected after a breach in the embankment of the Aaunil canal at Karnapal village in the Chhendipada block of Angul district on Wednesday, causing significant damage to their vegetable fields.
According to reports, the breach in the canal’s embankment caused water to spread over a 20-foot area, inundating the surrounding homes and agricultural land. As a result, several households were submerged, and vegetable crops were destroyed, leaving farmers facing heavy losses.
In response, officials from the Chhendipada Tehsil, along with the Revenue Inspector (RI), arrived at the site. Fire brigades were also deployed to help remove the water and mitigate the damage. Meanwhile, repair work on the canal has commenced to prevent further flooding.
Villagers, however, have expressed long-standing concerns over the canal’s condition.
Despite multiple complaints in the past regarding the lack of maintenance, local authorities had not taken adequate action, according to the affected residents.
Authorities are now working to repair the canal and provide relief to the affected families, though frustration remains over the delayed response to earlier warnings.
