Video Of Satellite-Tagged Olive Ridley Turtles Released In Odisha Goes Viral

Bhubaneswar: A captivating video of two Olive Ridley turtles, tagged with satellite trackers, being released by the Forest Department of Odisha has gone viral on social media.

These turtles were tagged with geo-tags, which included batteries and transmitters. The release took place at the Gahirmatha Marine Sanctuary in Kendrapada district.

The video was shared by Susanta Nanda, former Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife), on his social media account X (formerly Twitter). It has captivated viewers, leaving them in awe of the conservation efforts.

The video shows one of the turtles, marked with a geo-tag, making its way toward the sea while forest officials shine a light on the turtle, guiding it along the shore. The serene scene of the turtle’s nighttime journey toward the ocean, illuminated by soft lighting, creates a mesmerizing and emotional visual.

According to reports, this initiative will help enhance the understanding of the turtles’ nearshore behavior, habitat use, ranging patterns in Odisha waters, and post-nesting migratory routes.

Sharing the video, former PCCF (Wildlife) Nanda wrote in the caption: “The Forest Department of Odisha & WII have satellite-tagged two Olive Ridley turtles during this year’s mass nesting to provide more insight into their movement patterns.”

Since being shared, the video has garnered 15.8K views, 514 likes, and has been reposted by 56 people. Many users have commented on the video, with one user saying, “Great research. Kudos,” while another commented, “Kindly do not track them. Let them live naturally in their habitat.”
